The Cyc'd boys are very excited about riding tomorrow with a very special individual and a good friend Michael Groom.
Michael may be known to you already but if not here is a little about Michael....
In 1995 Michael became the fourth person in the world to climb the four highest mountains without the assistance of bottled oxygen. In 1999 he successfully climbed Makalu, the smallest and for Michael, the last of the 'big five' - the five highest mountains in the world. Makalu, Lhotse, Kangchenjunga, K2 and Everest - Michael climbed them all without the assistance of bottled oxygen, and all but Kangchenjunga he climbed without the front third of both feet.
Michael is a great bloke. He is humble about his extraordinary achievements and we enjoy riding and hanging out with him so tomorrow's ride will be that little more special.
Michael is now a full time professional speaker and while he resides in Brisbane he regularly travels the country and overseas to speak to various groups and has built a reputation for one of Australia's best and most sort after keynote speakers. If you would like to learn more about Michael's story or book him for an event please check out his website at http://www.michaelgroom.com/

Quote of the day and some cycling as well
This morning saw the lads make their regular Wednesday pilgrimage to the base of Mt Cootha something we kind of look forward to in a mildly sadistic way. As we did Dammo was busy trying to work out how many Wednesdays there are between now and 3 September when we depart for Townsville (the answer Dammo is 9!!) while the rest of us were trying to wake up and not think about the climbing ahead.
As we started up the first part of the climb Dammo asked if we were keen on something a little different which got us all wondering what he had in mind.
A few weeks ago Brad said that he had heard that if you do sets up the back way of Cootha it was good training (not sure which cycle mag he had been reading but he seemed convinced this was a good idea). Dammo put out the challenge to give Brad's idea a go so off to the back side of Cootha it was.
The sets involved riding 250m up and then back down 500m up and then down 1 km up and then back down. This equated to one set and Dammo had us do 2 sets followed by a final 500m effort to finish the session off. While we all whinged a bit it was a good training ride and certainly something a little different for a Wednesday morning.
Tomorrow is our rest day before we get back into four big days of training.
Oh yeah the quote of the day belongs to Brad. Apparently it is his wife's birthday today so he took her out for a romantic dinner last night and after finishing the last effort on Cootha a little behind the other lads he was heard to say:
"I know my effort this morning fellas was a bit substandard but boy you should have seen me last night!!!"
Our response.....Brad you need to bring your "A game" to the hills mate and not keep it for home big guy!!

Who is Adam Smiddy?
This challenge that we are fortunate to be a part of is named after a very special individual named Adam Smiddy. None of the Cyc'd boys knew him but we feel like we do. He touched many people's lives and the Smiddy Challenge keeps his memory alive for so many people.
Here is a video that gives an insight into Adam Smiddy....

Cyc'd team traverse Australia 4 times!!!
A quick update on our cumulative kilometres travelled so far this year.
As of today we have cycled 17,274km which is the equivalent of Brisbane - Sydney - Perth return TWICE!!
That means each of us has ridden the equivalent of one of those legs not bad for a few guys who are having lots of fun both on and off the bike.

Epic climb
Last week we decided that we needed to seek out some seriously big steep hills to ride this weekend and around Brisbane the climbs don't come much bigger or harder than the ride from Samford to Mt Glorious.
All week the banter over coffee seemed to revolve around just how hard this climb would be. It seemed the more we talked about it the longer and steeper it became.
Well today finally arrived and it was with some mild trepidation that the Cyc'd boys plus their super domestique and renowned climber Jase headed off to Samford. Jase had promised to find a flat way from Wilston to Samford. There may in fact be one but via Bunya definitely isn't it...thanks Jase. At least the legs had warmed up by the time we got to Samford with the route Jase had us follow.
As we cruised through Samford spirits were high although there was an uneasy feeling that our peaceful Sunday ride was about to become a whole lot harder.
With a final quick stop before the climbing started the lads were ready to go. Perhaps it was the nervousness of the group but we found lots to laugh about particularly when Dammo told the story of a guy who recently walked across the Simpson desert for charity and underwent a full body waxing as part of his preparation. As you could imagine this had the lads almost in tears.Things could have got a bit nasty as Jase refused point blank to carry all of our water bottles to the top but nonetheless we headed off five riders on and UP into the unknown. Dammo again pulled out one of those classic motivational lines when he said "remember guys when you get that first senstation of pain the body has only reached 30% of its thresehold so harden the f*#k up and keep riding!!". Thanks Dammo for those truly inspirational words.
The initial climb was almost a pleasure as we rode up a reasonable gradient which saw the light hearted banter continue until we were suddenly confronted by the 15 per cent gradient which seemed to go on and on and on.
Jase paved the way and Dammo showed good form to follow. Gav punched out a steady tempo while seated. Kent remained focussed on the job at hand and went to school on Gav's use of the entire road to make good progress.
Brad likewise was working hard and slowly but surely the kms passed and finally we emerged at the top of the road only to find that we still had a about 2kms of climbing ahead of us. We regrouped and rode into the coffee shop at the top of Mt Glorious for a brief stop before heading back home via Mt Nebo which while progressively downhill still has some nasty little pinches which require the legs to work hard.
Coffee at Brot at Ashgrove was a real treat and the boys were pretty shagged but happy having done a very solid 80k ride and ticking off the Samford Mt Glorious ride in the process...great work guys a tough day in the saddle.

Great start to the weekend
A nice start to the weekend for the Cyc'd lads with a flat and pretty fast 70k ride down the bayside and back to Spoon for coffee and muffins by 7.30am. Avg speed in excess of 30kmh which was a good sign we were working pretty hard.
The main subject of discussion over coffee was tomorrow's ride up to Mt Glorious via Samford. Opinions on just how steep and how long the climb differed among the group but what we all agreed on was that it was going to be bloody hard work.
Looks like a nervous sleep tonight as the boys ponder what lies ahead. Should make for an interesting post tomorrow!!

Big weekend of training planned
After a solid week of cycling which saw us do a combination of reps up Cootha, a riverloop and a Caridale/Mt Gravatt loop the boys are planning another good weekend of training.
Saturday will be a relatively flat but hard 70k ride down the bayside before we take on Mt Glorious on Sunday. We've decided to attack it from the Samford side which is a brute of climb (so we are told) but we need to test out our climbing legs with the Warwick training weekend only a few short weeks a way which involves a massively steep and long climb.
Rumour has it that Gav has fitted a 29 cog on his bike for Sunday so we shall see how he goes. Stay tuned for an interesting report on Sunday.

Come ride with the Cyc'd boys
Following some enquiries from the other Smiddy riders during last Sunday's training ride we thought we would put up our training rides on the blog so that others riders who are looking for some training partners can join us if they wish.
We'll post the following details a few days in advance but its probably best to check the night before in case there is a late change.
- meeting place
- meeting time
- route
Routes include Mt Cootha (reps up the front), Carindale/Mt Gravatt, reps up Mt Gravatt, Redcliffe, Carbrook, Wynnum/Manly, Mt Glorious, Mt Mee and of course the Riverloop (not very often these days).
No need to let us know if your coming but we will be departing at the stated time.
A few things to note:
1. If its raining don't bother coming as the Cyc'd boys will be tucked up nice and dry in bed
2. Be prepared to take a turn on the front or risk the wrath of Gav
3. Don't be too serious. If you can't have a bit of fun at 5am stay in bed
4. We ALWAYS stop for coffee at the end of the ride so bring $5 so we can all enjoy a coffee
5. We start early like 4.45am early don't ask me why but Brad says "that's how we roll"
If you need more info contact Kent @ kbeasley@wesresources.com.au

Cyc'd team ride from Brisbane to London
With a good week of training just completed our collective training kilometres since 1 Jan 2011 has reached 16,135km which is about the distance from Brisbane to London.....not bad for a few guys just having fun and raising some money for cancer research.
With 74 days still remaining before we head off we're planning on reaching 30,000km by 3 September.
With 74 days still remaining before we head off we're planning on reaching 30,000km by 3 September.
1000 kilometres in 48 hours
Well we knew that this weekend just past was going to be a big one for the team with the Smiddy training on Sunday but we didn't know it was going to be this big!!
Between 6am Saturday and 6 am Monday the team completed a total of 1000 kilometres in what was a great effort by all the boys. We actually had reached 940 kilometres at 1.30pm yesterday at the end of the Smiddy ride so Dammo and Kent took one for the team and hauled their tired butts out of bed at 4.15am for a quick 40k ride to see us reach our goal of 1000ks. Not quite sure how Brad and Gav managed to work that but good luck to them as it was bloody cold out there this morning.
Stay tuned for an update on our total kilometres travelled so far this year......

Awesome training ride Sunday!!!!!
Today we awoke excited to know that we would be riding 160ks with the people who will be joining us on the long road to Townsville in just a couple of months.
We also awoke to the thermometer hovering around the 7 degree mark so a nice chilly start to our long day. We met up at the Uni and rolled out just after 6am. 21 riders and our support man Peter in his rather flashy Audi.
The day could not have been any better cloudless skies, quiet country roads, barely a breeze to mention and some like minded cycling tragics....what a great way to spend a Sunday.
The Cyc'd team was appropriately kitted out and looked good in the peleton with more than the odd comment being heard from the other riders. There was one awkward moment when one of the guys from the team mentioned that the Giant knicks were actually quite see through which caused a minor ruckus in the peleton.
The stop at the Rosewood bakery lived up to its legendary status with the lads enjoying a jam donut or two.
The stop at Peak Crossing saw Sharky give one of his inspirational Smiddy talks and had us all super motivated for the final 50k ride home.
The ride along the Centenary Highway was simply outstanding with smooth tarmac roads and wide verges saw the peleton cruising along at about 38kph but things soon changed when the Cyc'd super domistiques Brad, Gav and Dammo found themselves at the front and drove the peleton at even greater speeds chasing some mystical breakaway while protecting their GC rider. The riders were in awe of these three who drove the pace hard.
Things were looking good for Team Cyc'd until one of the team suffered an unfortunate mechanical at a crucial point. This is where things went a little wrong for the team with confusion reigning over what had happened Brad allegedly made the call to switch GC riders and continued to drive hard. Gav and Dammo were torn between supporting Brad and falling back to help Kent who was by now in desperate solo time trial mode to catch the peleton. Fortunately a Cyc'd wannabe dropped back and lent hand which saw the Cyc'd wannabe and Kent take a different route over some brutal hills to actually get in front of the peleton.
When the group regathered there were excuses a plenty as to what saw the split in the Cyc'd team but soon all was forgiven and the peleton rolled in to the Uni after completing 176kms not the 160kms promised by Sharky.
We finished with the famous Smiddy huddle and cheer. A great day was had by all.
Sharky the founder of Smiling for Smiddy joined the boys for a team photo at the end. Its a great group of guys and a fantastic cause.

So what are the boys up to this weekend??
Well with only 77 days before we start our journey to Townsville its time we starting getting a bit more serious about our training not that we haven't been out there doing the hard yards most mornings but we all agree we need to step it up.
With that in mind we are joining some of the other Smiddy Challenge riders and heading off on a 160km this Sunday. Its been a few weeks since we did such a ride so I know the lads are all looking forward to 5 or so hours in the saddle before having a fews beers and getting to know the other riders a little better.
I'll let you all know how the ride goes and hopefully posta few pics from the ride.

Fund raising passes $22,000
Our fund raising continues to gain momentum as we pass $22,000.
It's a great time to stop and say a big thank you to everyone who has generously supported us as we raise money for vital cancer research. Your support keeps us getting out if bed at 4am at least 4 mornings each week to do the work necessary to get us to Townsville in 8 days.

The Locker Room Lunch
Thursday the 9th of June was the first “Locker Room Lunch” to take place in the famous Trophy Room of The Paddo Tavern. This was the brainchild of Matt Coorey (Venue Manager) whom is well known for organising a great lunch with good food and great service.
The day went off without a hitch and the pace was set from the start thanks to the combined efforts of Matt and Marty Rowan at the helm. They kept the audience entertained and assisted hearing some great stories from guest speakers Bart Sinclair and Broncos Coach Anthony Griffin. Not to forget the opportunity for Marty to take the piss out of me as well.
The auction item was a race day package valued at $3500 sponsored by Coca-Cola Amatil which fetched a princely sum of $4,000 thanks to Greenbank RSL and Aruze Gaming.
I am overwhelmed by the support from the day and I wanted to take one final opportunity to thank the following people for supporting my fundraising efforts on the day.

Coldest ride of the year today
Well the mercury plummeted here in Brisbane but the boys (less Gav the youngest member of our team who had a nice warm sleep in) were still out on the road at 4.30am despite the temperature reaching a chilly 6 degrees which felt more like 3 degrees on the bike.
It was so cold that we were even forced to have our coffee inside at our regular coffee haunt Spoon East Brisbane.
Hoping for a slightly warmer mornings in the coming weeks as we ramp up our milage.

Cyc'd for Smiddy fund raising tops $20,000
Its been a big, no make that a huge week of fund raising for the guys this week which has seen the team's total top $20,000!!!
An awesome effort by everyone in our team but the good news doesn't stop there thanks to a great lunch at the Paddington Tavern yesterday where Smiling for Smiddy was the designated charity. Watch this space for some fantastic news on the result of the day. I think we might be soon revising our target up.

Bunnings sausage sizzle raises over $2,250 for cancer research
Well the our team's financial planner (Dammo) has reconciled the books after the Bunnings sausage sizzle last Sunday and has advised that we made $2,276.80 profit from the day which is an awesome effort.
This wouldn't have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors for the day Coles and Coca Cola who donated the sausages, bread and drinks which meant it was pretty much all profit from the sale of the 900 sausages and 300 drinks.

Awesome effort at Bunnings sausage sizzle
Well it was a great effort at the Cyc'd for Smiddy Bunnings sausage sizzle today.
I'd like to thank all the team for really getting into the Smiddy spirit by serving up sausages and drinks for 7 hours without a break.
A big thank you to the wives who pitched in Viv, Fluer and Hayley and Dammo's two boys who were a great help....thanks everyone.
The final total for the day is still being calculated but with 850 sausages sold, a couple of hundred drinks and $600 worth of raffle tickets (thanks to Sarah and Ellie who did a great job!!) we will hopefully be banking a couple of thousand dollars for our fund raising efforts.
Thanks again to our sponsors for the day:
Coles
Coca Cola
Cyc'd for Bikes
Ultra Apartments
Bunnings
Officeworks
Here's a couple of pics from the day......

Scrivo's May Update
Hello all, Welcome to our Blog site which Kent has done a great job setting up. Take the opportunity to check out some of the previous posts while you are here.
Well, another month has passed and one that has been full of training and fundraising efforts. Thanks again to some very generous people I have now reached $3,110 which again I am overwhelmed by the support I am receiving. This takes our team tally just over $19k thanks to some great work by the remaining guys in the Cyc’d team.
The training this month has been quite challenging riding some 1100 klm’s while climbing 11,753 metres. Thanks to an organised training ride I managed to achieve my longest ride ever of 200klm in one day which resulted in 7.5 hours in the saddle from Fernvale (a mere 6 degrees at 6am) through Esk and up the range to Crows Nest and back. It is overwhelming when you think that another 7 days of this and we would be in Townsville. Could I back up for another ride the next day? Yes, but I think I may have struggled if we had to climb that many hills again.
With regards to fundraising, we have been keen selling raffle tickets and organising some fund raising activities. I have jotted below some dates during June: -
June 5th – Bunnings Cannon Hill Sausage Sizzle. Come on down and enjoy a snag and grab a cold drink as well if you have the chance.
June 9th – Thanks to McGuires Hotels there is a lunch being held at The Paddo which is one of the first of the Locker Room Lunch series that will involve some special guest speakers and great prizes and auction items to raise funds for The Smiddy Challenge. A big thanks to Matt McGuire and Matt Coorey for their support and energy on this event.
Also a special mention needs to go to my wife (Fleur) as she has been wonderful with taking up the slack at home while I am out training. Couldn’t do it without you sweetheart.
If you wish to donate to my fundraising page, you can do so through the link below

Alternatively if you have any ideas or feel you could sell some raffle tickets on our behalf, don’t forget to drop me a line as we would be very greatful.
Thanks again for your support and until next month, give a thought to those who have been touched by Cancer as I have nothing to complain about waking up at 3:45am on a winter’s morning in comparison to what some people and families are going through.
Cheers
Riding 1600kms in 8 days, that’s hard... Donating to cancer research, that’s easy.
